Let me rephrase. I had originally went to meet the people behind the new publishing house translating Adrienne's works into Spanish, but by God's providence, I was really meeting the future of Adrienne's secular institute, the Johannesgemeinshaft. Yes, they are doing wonderful translations and editions of Adrienne's works, primarily in Spanish, but in these men and who they represent, I could clearly see the next generation impacted by Adrienne's life, works, thought, and presence. And it looks solid.
Nicolas, Giacomo, Daniele, as well as Fr. Ricardo (not pictured), welcomed me to their beautiful Madrid office. This publishing house is only a few years old and often works with the Maior Fundación among other groups. Though young, they have already produced high quality editions of Adrienne's works as well as the works of Hans Urs von Balthasar and Pope Benedict XVI. And if I may say, these books are really well done.
I fell in love with this wonderful book Apocalipsis de San Juan, which includes the text of the last book of Scripture together with excellently reproduced icons and illuminations with commentary from Adrienne von Speyr. If you get only one book from them, this will be the one. (disclosure: they provided me a free copy, but I have since bought others).
In my interview, I came to learn and appreciate the philosophy behind this publishing house. Whereas some of the initial translations of Adrienne's works in Spanish (and definitely in English) were sometimes inconsistent, difficult, and rushed, they however intend to produce the best translations of Adrienne’s corpus in the major European languages. They agonize over the proper translation so that the words, sentences, and books provide the same decisive impact as the originals. In this way, Adrienne's book Confession provides their method - standing in the raw presence of the one who overcomes limits in order to break open to the limitless. For them, it's a spiritual act accompanied with deep prayer, study, and community.
More importantly, the editors and translators have chosen to focus on Adrienne von Speyr because they believe strongly that she is a door to enter more deeply into the Church and therefore into Jesus Christ.
After looking through their catalog, I encourage you to consider supporting them. They produce high-quality collections because they are anxiously concerned to collect the right pictures, paper, typography, and covers that will best display their excellent translations of the critical editions.
And check back often or contact them as they work on new translations and editions that will deeply impress you.
Lastly, my visit to this publishing house to see the editors, translators, and people that support this work encourages me that the next generation will continue to develop dynamically the rich gift of Adrienne's literary world and theological thought for many more generations. Viva la Adrienne!
